Gratitude, Growth Zones And Making Films: Hannah Varnell

As we prepare for The Front Festival 2021, we’re sharing interviews with some of the creatives on our lineup. Today, we’re spotlighting Hannah Varnell, a filmmaker and the director of GIRLS LIKE US.

WHO: HANNAH VARNELL ​

Hannah Varnell is an Austin-based photographer and cinematographer born among the sweet gumtrees of North Carolina. She has worked with brands such as Al Jazeera, New York Times, Travel Channel, Food Network, Southwest Airlines, and Capital One—in addition to Austin musicians and festivals.

1. What’s your day-to-day mantra?

I’ll forever remain grateful.

3. What is your vision for your work? Life?

Everything is circular. 

4. The thing you most wish for the world is…

We escape the invisible shackles of capitalism. Every country pays reparations. 

5. How do you want people to feel when they see your work?

“Maybe I should be kinder and more patient” or hot and bothered depending on the genre. 

6. No. 1 muse?

Mother Nature.

7. What’s the first thing you think of in the morning?

I started using a sleep schedule app so lately it’s been—damn, it feels incredible to get up at the same time every day. 

8. Craziest thing on your bucket list?

Not a big planner when it comes to thrills, so I’ve never made one. 

9. Favorite scene in GIRLS LIKE US?

Way too many stars, how could I possibly choose just one! Each number is a unique snowflake borne in the imagination of musician royalty brought to life by the most kind and talented crew.

10. You want the future of Texas to look like…

No Greg Abbott, more protected bike lanes. 

11. What emerging Texan artists/photographers should we have on our radars?

All the badass artists on the GLS crew—our Steadicam Op @mjfilms is a sick Director of Photography, @Maggie.m.Bailey, @emilybasma, and @bianca_greene all talented directors/photographers, @rvbyknight is an incredible performer—just to name a few. Austin is amazing because it's not uncommon you'll be on a set where you're surrounded by people who inspire you.

12. How would you describe your creative process?

Plow pose on the Ladybird lake boardwalk while the sun sets.

13. Who’s your dream collaborator?

Lil Nas.

14. What would you love to see more of from the film industry?

Crews that are representative of the population.

15. Currently reading/watching...

Reading Mating in Captivity by Esther Perel. Watching Next in Fashion.

16. What does a day-in-the-life of Hannah consist of?

Tacos, matcha lattes, retro interior design instagrams.

17. Proudest personal or career milestone?

Proud of myself every day I wake up and am excited to get out of bed. All it takes is one depressive episode to make you never take that for granted. Sending love to anyone currently struggling. <3

18. Something new you’re trying?

Hold things less tightly.

19. Best advice you’ve been given?

There is no growth in the comfort zone, and there’s no comfort in the growth zone.

20. What are you most excited about in life right now?

The fact that I create my own destiny.
